I never played Overlord 1 but Overlord 2 was a fun and enjoyable game for me.
You play as a dark hero called the Overlord, and your story begins off as a small evil child with magic, in a small village that doesn't take kindly to it.
You are outcasted by the other children and called "witch boy". Your mother abandoned you mysteriously and you are left to fend for yourself. Your adventure begins when you encounter your ancestor's goblin servants called browns which lead you to an encounter with the glorious empire as they siege your village looking for any magical creatures.
It is the "Glorious Empire's" goal to rid the entire world of magic, including you and your goblin friends. So the village hands you over to protect itself, and your story continues from there.
Pros:
1. Good graphics, environment and a good number of interactable things to smash
2. Goblin army of 4 different types to command at once to unleash upon your enemies, buildings, and to collect loot for you. Soldier, ninja, healer and fire thrower goblins are at your command, giving you tools for strategy.
3. The choice to dominate your enemies will or destroy them except for soldiers.
4. In some levels being able to command a ship and ram your enemies ship or attack them from the ship with your goblins long range fire attacks.
5. Plenty of silliness and mayhem
6. Lots of powerups during your quests to upgrade your army
7. You can upgrade your dark tower Headquarters and upgrade your heroes equipment and goblins base strengths.
8. You can have 3 mistresses to lighten up your dark tower
9. No bugs that I encountered, very stable game. Just some annoying design flaws that I'll discuss in the cons.
10. Good music
11. Good voice acting
12. Game makes use of enemy solder formations which make them very tough to kill until you break the formation
Cons:
1. Game is not very challenging, at least not for me. I think the AI in this game was sub par and would sometimes act really stupid like continuing to ram into a wall. Enemies were very easy to kill as well including bosses. When you encounter advanced archers they are high damage dealers if you don't deal with them, you could end up dead. That's about it.
2. Game is too short, not long lasting and not enough quests
3. Game is linear, you spawn from your dark tower into the level and go from point A to point B. With the small detours that contain items and such.
4. When you dominate enemies and they follow you, they get in the way so badly that you literally get trapped and cannot move, so you have to kill them, which wastes them when they could have been used as cannon fodder. The collision detection was annoying because they would not get out of your way especially in tight corners.
Conclusion:
Don't let the cons keep you away from experiencing this game. I played it all through and despite the cons that I experienced, I walked away happy and felt my money was well spent. I expect Overlord 3 to be better and to have these problems taken care of. Have fun!
