The year is 1908. Chen Chen arrives in Shanghai to attend the funeral of his mentor and teacher, the famous martial arts master Ho Yuan-chia. Ho, the founder of the famous Ching Wu School, died under suspicious circumstances and Chen is hard hit by his death.  

Even before Ho is cold in the ground, the Japanese Martial Arts Association has issued a challenge through its Chinese interpreter, Hu En: Fight or be forever damned as the “Sick Man of East Asia”. Angered at the insult, Chen storms the Association.

His rash actions lets loose a domino reaction. The powerful Japanese demand that the authorities arrest him and Chen decides to lay low by leaving Shanghai. However, as he is about to leave, he uncovers new information about his master’s death that leads him to Hu En, who confesses his part in poisoning Ho.

Chen brings the culprits to his brand of justice. But as he once again tries to flee, he learns that his enemies have slaughtered his brothers at Ching Wu School and that his master’s dream school is under threat if he does not give himself up.Chen returns to the school and steels himself for
 a challenge to the death.
